WITNESS
A. Sage Smith is a former offender who served a long-term sentence in Illinois' prisons. While imprisoned he reformed and educated himself, primarily studying law, sociology, history, and religions. He was assigned Chief Legal Assistant at the prison law library and for nine years was the legal clerk for inmates on Menard's death row. For this he received the 2003 Humanitarian Award from the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (ICADP). Mr. Smith is on the Board of Directors of the John Howard Association and the Board of Directors of ICADP; a member of Positive Anti-Crime Trust, Inc. (P.A.C.T.); and a member of the Governor's Task Force on Re-Entry, a program under the auspices of the Illinois Department of Human Services. He is now Director of Client Services of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law.
